We have all grown up believing in certain facts that over the years have become knowledge, for example every fruit is nutritious, the hair and nails continue to grow even when we are dead, etc. But how true are these facts? Read through as we bust five age-old myths.

*FRESH VEGETABLES ARE BETTER THAN FROZEN ONES

Many studies have claimed that frozen fruits and vegetables can be as nutritious as the fresh ones. According to researchers, a fruit or veggie as it is popularly called begins to lose its nutrients once it is picked up from the farm, and by the time it gets to the local grocery store, it has lost quite a large amount of nutrients. On the other hand, a frozen fruit is immediately processes once it is picked and, as a result can retain its nutrient levels better.

*ALCOHOL WARMS YOU UP

Drinking alcohol may make your skin feel warm, but this apparent heat is deceptive. Alcohol actually lowers your body temperature by dilating blood vessels and making veins pump warm blood closer to the skin. But this process causes the body to lose its core heat. Therefore, sipping a brandy may make you feel warm immediately, but it wont last long.

*COVERING YOUR HEAD KEEPS YOU WARM

Parents usually fuss over their kids going out in the cold without a hat on, believing that most of the body heat is lost through the head, but scientists consider this a myth. A medical journal report states that a person loses only 7 to 10 percent of body heat through the head. Infact, our body loses a disproportionate amount of heat through any part that is exposed, including hands and toes.

*CARBOHYDRATES MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT

Its a common belief that cutting down on carbs helps you to lose weight, but before you eliminate carbs from your diet completely, listen to this. There is nothing inherently fattening about carbohydrates. Complex carbs in grains, fruits, and vegetables provide energy to the body, thus are very important. The carbs to be avoided are the simple or refined ones present in foods made of white flour or with a high sugar content.

*IF YOU SWALLOW YOUR GUM, IT WILL TAKE 7 YEARS TO DIGEST.

Swallowing your chewing gum doesn’t subject you to a gummy digestive tract for seven years, or hinder bowel movement for seven years. A portion of gum is indigestible, and like any indigestible substance that is consumed, it will simply pass through the gastrointestinal tract and be evacuated. The digestible ingredients in a wrap of bubble gum doesn’t take any longer than other foods to digest, and the indigestible portion doesn’t stick around for several years before leaving the body.

*DEODORANT CAUSES CANCER

Deodorants have been poorly accused of causing cancer, most especially breast cancer in women. However, there is no link between the use of these products and cancer.

Most individuals grew up believing most of these myths and over time these myths have even evolved into something more frightening. For example, most people still believe that toilet doors and handles are a hotbed for germs. This is not true because most bacteria need a warm, moist environment to survive and cannot live on hard, dry surfaces for long. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash your hands!
