the best fashion statement is a fit healthy body. There are several misconceptions about fitness. Some people just assume that fitness is solely meant for athletes or gymnasts. This is a totally wrong idea. Fitness-whether physical or mental is very important. It might be difficult to believe but whether you work in a bank, a law firm, a grocery store or as a traffic warden, it is imperative that you are fit both physically and mentally. Fitness isn’t about being better than the next person, but being better than you used to be.

Physical fitness has a lot to do with your physical being. The idea of keeping fit is not because you want to be a heavy weight champion someday, or win a beauty contest. Its because keeping fit ensures a healthy lifestyle. Its not just about exercising regularly, but making sure you eat the right thing. Take for instance a man who spends six hours in the gym every morning trying to shed some fat and immediately he leaves the gym, on his way home, he buys three packets of chocolate, a bowl of fries and deep fried chicken. By the end of the month, he would have doubled in size because as he sheds weight in the morning, he adds double of it before the end of the day because of what he eats right after the exercise. Its wrong to eat heavy after an intense workout session, its best to take water first or any sports drink to replace lost electrolytes. Even a glass of milk can do the trick. Lets briefly talk about what electrolytes are; Electrolytes are minerals that break into small, electrically-charged particles called ions when they dissolve in water. They are found in blood and cells, and these electrolytes are essential to physical activity because they regulate body fluids. Physical function may hang in the balance if electrolyte levels remain low after a workout session. The side effects of not replacing electrolytes can include dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. Now, when and how much to eat or drink depends on few factors like exercise routine and intensity, weather condition and individual differences. The long term effect of not replacing lost electrolytes adequately is kidney failure.

The point is, don’t get killed trying to keep fit. Its not rocket science. On a more serious note, its best to  have a sports drink or at least a bottle of water with you every time you hit the gym. Even if you cant visit the gym regularly, try to take a walk once in a while or take the stairs, cut down on the carbs and cholesterol infested dishes. Look at it from this angle, Excess cholesterol is a tiny creature that hides in your closet and sews your clothes tighter every night. Let me explain . There are two types of cholesterol; the Low Density Level Cholesterol and High Density Cholesterol. A high low Density level cholesterol causes a build-up of cholesterol in your arteries, arteries are blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to your body. Lets save the rest for later, but the important thing is that when there is a build-up of cholesterol in the arteries, it becomes difficult for blood to have easy passage which makes blood circulation difficult. Now you understand what I mean by ..”sews your clothes tighter every night” Too much cholesterol makes the arteries too narrow for blood to pass and this could lead to cardiovascular disease, numbness etc.

Physical fitness gets a lot of attention, and for good reason too because it helps to prevent conditions like heart disease and diabetes and also helps maintain independence as you age. Mental fitness is a different ball game entirely. Incorporating mental dexterity exercises into your life can help you have a sharper and more attentive mind. Mental fitness is exactly what it sounds like, its exercising your brain regularly with mental drills. I’ve heard several people complain about reading. You hear statements like ‘..I fall asleep immediately I pick up a book to read” Personally, I think people need to cultivate a good reading habit. Its okay to have favourite genres when it comes to books, but it wont hurt you to read wide too. The height of mental fitness is your ability to use your imagination to calm your nerves. One of the characteristics of a healthy mind is your ability to paint a picture in your mind and bring it to life. Imagine after a long day, you decide to go to bed a little early, your body is ready to sleep but your mind isn’t. A healthy mind has the ability to paint a scene that places you on a beach in the Bahamas, laying down in the cool sand. You can hear the ocean rushing towards you and then it suddenly pulls back. You can feel the cool breeze on your skin, you can feel the goose bumps on your skin rising. Now that is an active mind. After painting that kind of scene, trust me, it wont take up to five minutes before such an individual falls asleep. Why do you think Psychologists use this method to keep patients calm and responsive during therapy sessions?

The bottom line is , fitness is everyone’s business. The human body is the greatest work of art, to keep it that way, it requires hard work. You need to do away with meals and thoughts that will do more harm than good, and stick to things that will add value to your body and mind. It is our choices that show what we really are, far more than our abilities.
